What Is Anal Canal Cancer?

Anal canal cancer develops in the anal canal, the final part of the digestive tract. It occurs when cells in this area grow uncontrollably and may spread to nearby or distant parts of the body.


What Causes It?

Anal canal cancer develops from changes in cell DNA. Risk factors may include:

  • HPV (human papillomavirus) infection

  • Age

  • Weakened immune system

  • Family or personal history of cancer

  • Obesity

How Is It Diagnosed?

Diagnosis may include:

  • Imaging (CT, PET, MRI, ultrasound)

  • Biopsy to confirm cancer

  • Anal pain or discomfort

  • Changes in bowel habits

  • Difficulty passing stool
